It’s not easy finding your ancestors immigration into some of the many minor ports of Victoria. It’s not impossible but sometimes the answer is elusive. And understanding WHY your ancestors arrived in these coastal areas can help in your search.

I’m not sure if it will be repeated – I speak around Victoria to different groups and it really depends if they choose the same topic as there are a wide variety of topics. My future talks are generally shown in ‘Upcoming Events’ on the right in this Blog. Hi Susie, my husbands relatives info says they were to go to Port Albert, but settled in Portarlington. There are no records of them arriving at Port Albert. Why would that have happened. Thanks in advance.

Hi Judy,
If they arrived at Point Henry it’s possible that they realised Portarlington was a lot closer than another ship to Port Albert.
They may have been ‘sponsored’ to Port Albert but circumstances changed with their sponsor.
It is unlikely that you will find any reference to them arriving at Port Albert – very few passenger lists survive.
They may have gone there before going to Portarlington – you need to reassure yourself with their date of arrival in Port Phillip / Victoria and the first instance of them being in Portarlington.

Dear Susie, Some time ago I sent an email requesting help as offered after my donation. You may have said you will deal with my request when you have time but my issue has not been addressed. The question was could you identify the ship on which Catherine Mcpherson arrived. I attached a lot of information but the essence was that she was born 22/11/1830 at Drumgask farm,Laggan, Inverneshire, Scotland and married Roderick Robertson at the Free Church Manse in Geelong on 8/10/1855. Tre last Scottish record for Catherine was the 1851 census. I have searched the usual sites (PROV, Ancestry and found the Georgiana but that Catherine was married and a Catherine on Marco Polo was not convincing). Can you suggest anywhere else to search please? I also have a query about Point Henry. Was there a wharf there or did ships anchor. I have a print that suggests that there was a wharf but i would like to be sure. Best wishes Denis Robertson
